10:15 a.m.       Iowa Medical Cannabis Program

Presenter: Andrea Weber, MD, Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, Iowa Health

Overview: Since 2017, the Iowa Medical Cannabis Program has provided highly-regulated cannabis products for qualifying medical conditions. This session will review the history of Iowa’s law, the current structure of the program, and the impacts of medical cannabis in lieu of federal regulations.

At the end of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Understand how patients register and utilize the Iowa Medical Cannabis Program.

2. Review the limitations of the program as it pertains to employment, education, or other federal regulations.

11:15 a.m.        Recreational Use of Marijuana Products and Their Impact on Care

Presenter: Abby Souder, Social Worker, Addiction and Recovery Collaborative,  Iowa Health Care

With increased recreational availability and use of cannabis products, there has been ongoing discussion about implications for care of patients who use. This session will discuss some of the different products in use, considerations for language and harm reduction practices, as well as current questions related to use by minors, consent for care, and intoxication's impact on whether care should be provided.

At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to:

1. Understand rage of cannabis products and use.

2. Harm reduction practices and person first language for people who use drugs.

3. Understand considerations for care with people who use cannabis.

                   Presenters: Officers Tyler Melchert and Alton Poole, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety
