Speaker Profile

Dr. Ana N. López-Fuentes, D.M.D., M.P.H., FACD, FICD is a tenured Professor in the Community Dentistry Section of the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine (UPRSDM). She served as Dean of the UPRSDM from 2014-2018. She received the 2018 Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors Citation for significant contributions to dental education. This citation recognized her outstanding leadership while Dean of the dental school after Hurricane María devastated Puerto Rico, maintaining the school’s accreditation, keeping it open and helping affected communities; thanks to donations from academia and dental associations in the United States.

Dr. López-Fuentes is the Co-Chair of ADEA’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, a member of the ADEA Collaborative on Dental Education Climate Assessment (CDECA), the UPRSDM’s ADEA Women Liaison Officer since 2006, and Immediate Past Chair of ADEA’s Women in Leadership Section.

Course Description

This presentation will describe the career path and story of one of the women chronicled in the recently published book “Undaunted Trailblazers: Minority Women Leaders for Oral Health.”  Dr. Ana N. López-Fuentes will talk about her story, career path and advice on how to be a leader in dentistry.

Objectives

  1. Describe the path as a 1st generation, Hispanic, female college student to Dean
  2. Identify challenges and opportunities in the leadership career path
  3. Illustrate experience in how to build collaborations and unity during crisis
