Program and Objectives
This fast-paced and interactive conference will present a variety of contemporary pediatric dental topics by national and international recognized leaders in Pediatric Dentistry. The course is targeted to all providers who treat children, and it is designed to increase the comfort level and expertise of the entire dental team when it comes to treating today’s pediatric patient, from infancy through adolescence, including those individuals with special health care needs. The course has been designed to be stimulating and informative welcoming audience participation through a series of clinical cases and challenging the participant to think “outside of the box.” From treatment planning strategies to contemporary restorative and endodontic techniques, oral pathology, behavioral management, sedation practice, preventive measurements, patient advocacy and research in the area of fluoride parental hesitance, this course is sure to give participants valuable information to tackle some of the most challenging situations encountered in today’s pediatric dental patients.
The following series of lectures will be presented by alumni of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.

9:20 a.m. Michael Kanellis, DDS, MS
"The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: Four Decades of Pediatric Dentistry"
Dr. Michael Kanellis is Dean of Clinics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Prior to his appointment to this position in 2005 he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kanellis spent thirteen years in private practice before joining the faculty at the University of Iowa on a full-time basis in 1994.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Identify limitations of non-pharmacologic behavior management techniques in treating young children;
- Recognize the benefits of utilizing a traumatic restorative treatment and glass ionomers in managing caries in young children;
- Describe the Hall Technique for placing stainless steel crowns, and advantages to its use in young children; and
- Discuss the role of caries-arresting medicaments in managing caries in young children

10:35 a.m. David Olson, DDS, MS
"This Is How We Do It"
Dr. David Olson has been a private practice pediatric dentist in his hometown of Raleigh, NC for over 20 years. He received his DDS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his pediatric specialty training and Master’s in Dental Public Health at the University of Iowa. Dr. Olson has been President of the NC Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, helped develop the current school-based sealant program for the state of NC, and serves on the NC Board of Dental Examiner’s Sedation Committee.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Identify several products that may be game changers in daily practice;
- Recognize common issues with preparation and cementation of zirconia crowns in the anterior and posterior teeth; and
- Use a practical sedation system that is repeatable for each patient.
11:30 a.m. Donald Chi, DDS, PhD
"Fluoride Hesitancy in Practice: How to Spot and Manage It"
Dr. Donald Chi is professor and the Lloyd and Kay Chapman Endowed Chair of Oral Health at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and is Associate Dean for Research. His research focuses on understanding the causes of oral health inequities and addressing them through community-based behavioral interventions and evidence-based policies. He teaches public health to dental students and provides care for low-income children and teens as a staff pediatric dentist at the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic in Seattle.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Identify how common fluoride hesitancy is in practice;
- Describe the reasons why parents are hesitant about fluoride; and
- Outline clinical strategies to manage fluoride hesitancy in practice.

1:15 p.m. Craig Hollander, DDS, MS
"Treatment Planning for the Pediatric Dental Patient"
Dr. Craig Hollander completed his Iowa residency in 1991. He is in private practice and teaches in St. Louis, MO. He is on several committees within the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is grateful every day for choosing this career.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss treatment plan options so that parents are prepared for the worst;
- Assess treatment planning strategies with regard to the patient's dental age; and
- Identify when a tooth will benefit from an indirect pulp cap versus a pulpotomy.
2:15 p.m. Catherine Flaitz, DDS, MS
"Encounters Galore on the Gingiva of Children: Important Oral Lesions"
Dr. Catherine Flaitz is clinical professor and chair, Division of Diagnostic Sciences, The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Flaitz is a dual-trained oral and maxillofacial pathologist and pediatric dentist who proudly earned her specialty training from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. She enthusiastically shares her clinical and research experiences and passion for teaching about oral diseases in a practical way.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Identify newly described gingival lesions and anomalies in children;
- Describe common gingival lesions, including atypical presentations; and
- Recognize important red flags for serious diseases at this location.

3:30 p.m. Jessica Meeske, DDS, MS
"Dental Treatment for Low-Income Pediatric Patients: Where are we? Advocacy or Apathy?"**
Dr. Jessica Meeske is an alumnus of Iowa Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health residency. She is the senior partner of Pediatric Dental Specialist of Greater Nebraska with locations across the state. She has been active in Medicaid reform policy work at the state and national level through AAPD and ADA.
At the completion of this presentation, the participants should be able to:
- Increase their knowledge about barriers to Medicaid recipients finding a dental home for appropriate preventive, restorative, and emergency treatment;
- Identify strategies to provide high-quality clinical treatment for patients with significant barriers to care; and
- Identify what is and how to advocate for meaningful reform to improve access for patients with Medicaid in your practice.

Cancellations/Refunds:
Fees paid will be refunded less a $55 per person processing fee following notice of cancellation. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations received after the course begins. All refunds will be credited to your credit card. If insufficient enrollment necessitates canceling a course, all fees will be refunded.
Continuing Education Credit/Record Keeping:
A CEU verification will be provided (by email following the program) only for those individuals completing/submitting a CEU card at the completion of the program. Credit will be appropriately adjusted for those individuals who do not attend the entire program. All attendees are encouraged to submit a CEU card which will ensure that a letter documenting attendance will be sent following the program. The University of Iowa College of Dentistry designates this activity for 5.5 hours continuing education credit (0.55 CEU).
Football Tickets:
Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis. Tickets for Iowa vs. Northwestern on 10/29/22 are available at $92 each plus a $1 per ticket handling fee (limit 2 tickets per registration). Ticket requests will be filled until supply is exhausted. To order tickets, you must register and prepay for the continuing education program. Football tickets are again mobile this year. Your electronic football tickets will be texted/emailed to you prior to game day. You will need to display these items on your cell phone when you arrive on Saturday. Tickets will not be mailed. Payment for tickets cannot be refunded except when ticket supply is exhausted during the pre-registration period. Tickets cannot be transferred with a registration to another course

Parking is included with the course registration. All registrants must be pre-registered to gain entrance to the Dental visitor’s parking lot. Bring your course confirmation letter with you to ensure admittance to the lot. Otherwise, you may be directed to a remote lot.

Although every effort is made to have a comfortable temperature in the meeting room, we realize everyone’s comfort zone is different. Please bring a jacket or sweater in case the room is too cool for your comfort.
