Course Description

This course will discuss updated literature for Silver Nitrate (SN) and Silver Diammine Fluoride (SDF); and protocol for patient care along with their safety and adverse effects.

Participants should be to:

  • Identify the current research findings in the dental literature regarding SN and SDF;
  • List the indications, contraindications, and clinical protocol for applying silver products to dental caries lesions;
  • Explain the mechanism of action of silver compounds in arresting caries lesions;
  • Identify the biocompatibility, adverse effects, and safety of SDF and SN;
  • List the clinical procedures, appropriate CDT codes, and how to obtain consent to apply SDF in clinical practice; and
  • Identify the most relevant clinical applications for the silver products
Justine Kolker

Justine Kolker, DDS, MS, is an Associate Professor, Department of Operative Dentistry, University of Iowa, College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dr. Kolker joined the College in 2005 after completing a research fellowship at the University of Michigan and a MS in Operative Dentistry and a PhD in Oral Science at the University of Iowa as an NIDCR Dentist-Scientist. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Dental Public Health and the American Board of Operative Dentistry. Currently Dr. Kolker is clerkship director of Operative Dentistry for the third year dental students. She participates in the Faculty General Practice at the College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dr. Kolker's current interests include caries lesion detection and classification, in particular using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) as well as caries lesion management using the International Caries Classification and Management System (ICCMS). 

 

Arwa Owais

Arwa Owais, BDS, MS, is an Associate Professor, Department of Operative Dentistry, University of Iowa, College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Dr. Owais joined the College in 2013 as an associate professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. She served as a faculty member in the preventive dentistry department from 2000-2013 at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan. She was the vice dean of the College of Dentistry at Jordan University of Science and Technology from 2010-2013 and the head of the pediatric dentistry section at King Abdulla Hospital, Jordan, from 2010-2013. Dr. Owais is a predoctoral and postdoctoral lecturer and clinical instructor in Pediatric Dentistry. She has several publications in the area of children oral health as well as other areas in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Owais has a special interest and expertise in silver products basic and clinical research.
