Endodontic Dental Externship Program for Dental Students.

The purpose of this externship program is to increase the student's knowledge of the scope of Endodontic treatment. During this one week externship, the student will be exposed to the specialty of Endodontics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The experience will involve treatment of patients with emphasis on Endodontic needs requiring treatment and completion while the undergraduate clinic enters a six week break.

Activities may include:

  1. Direct patient care (limited to Iowa students)
    • University of Iowa Students must obtain additional insurance coverage for this Externship prior to start
    • Non University of Iowa Students must obtain proof of coverage of insurance through their Dental School prior to start in the Summer Externship
      • Additional information will be sent via email when completed application received
  2. Participate in Endodontic Graduate Program education seminars
  3. Endodontic Journal Club
  4. Observe and Assist Endodontic Residents in complex and surgical cases
  5. Treat an advanced endodontic case with one-on-one resident observation
  6. Visit Endodontic Private Practice(s) - Group and/or Individual

This program is available to dental students who have successfully completed all but their last year of the dental curriculum and will be limited to 3-7 students. The application can be obtained through this website. If you have problems using this electronic form, please contact Maria Hennes, or you may come to room W-343 in the Dental Science Building, and ask for a copy of the application.

The application requires the following:

  1. Name
  2. Mailing Address
  3. Email Address
  4. Phone Number(s)
  5. Emergency Contact - name, relation & their phone number(s)
  6. GPA
  7. Class Standing
  8. Unofficial Dental Transcripts - unless we, at a later date, request an official transcript
  9. Letter of Intent - minimum of one half page
  10. 2 Letters of recommendation from your College of Dentistry Faculty Members

You will receive an email from us when:

  1. Your online/paper application is received to confirm it was successfully received
  2. Your application is complete (the 2 letters of recommendation and unofficial dental transcripts are all received) to let you know that it will be reviewed when the application cycle is closed
  3. Within two weeks after the application cycle has closed to let you know if you have been approved or denied attendance to the Endodontic Summer Externship

We regret that we can only accommodate a limited number of students. Should more than 3-7 equally qualified applicants exist; the positions will be filled by department selection.

Please be advised that although this experience would be valuable to anyone interested in making the decision to pursue advanced education in Endodontics, it is certainly not required for application to the graduate program at Iowa, and will not guarantee automatic acceptance to the program. Upon Acceptance into the program, you will need to provide the following:

  1. Proof of the COVID 19 Vaccine or negative PCR Test (within 3 days of state of the Summer Fellowship)
  2. Proof of insurance for being in a clinical setting for the dates of the Summer Fellowship.

International Applicants:

  • You must only have one year left prior to completion of your dental training to apply for this program. (IE 5 year program you must have the first 4 years accomplished and the last left OR a 4 year program you must have the first 3 years accomplished and the last year left, etc.)
  • You are required to obtain proper paperwork and travel documentation for your one week stay in the United States.
  • International Students from non-English-speaking countries must also submit an acceptable TOEFL score of 101 or higher to apply to this Externship.

Highlights from the 2019 Summer Fellowship:

  • The Summer Fellowship participants, Dr. Cucco and Lisa went to visit Drs. Lui, Vos and Wicker's private practice in Cedar Rapids.
  • Each day in the morning, they had 2 seminars, except the day they went to the private practice.
  • In the afternoon they were in the Endodontic Clinic seeing patients or shadowing a University of Iowa student/resident
  • The Summer Fellowship participants saw patients or shadowed every afternoon.
