The University of Iowa Orthodontics Department is pleased to congratulate Dr. Kyungsup Shin for his ADEA 2023-2024 Leadership Institute Fellow nomination.

The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute offers an honorable fellowship program that develops the nation’s most promising educators at academic dental institutions. The ADEA Leadership Institute is an opportunity for professional development and it is considered the flagship program for outstanding mid-career faculty and administrators. Individuals who are nominated are dedicated to becoming future leaders in higher dental education and are preparing for positions such as department chairs or deans of dental schools. The following is required to be a nominated candidate:

  • Demonstrate leadership at his or her institution, in the community or through research.

  • Have a clear track record of increasing administrative responsibilities.

  • Have experience with responsibilities such as chairing committees, advising student groups or mentoring students and faculty.

  • Have experience with the development of local, regional or national faculty development workshops or community outreach programs.

  • Have a record of scholarly contributions to dental education through teaching or research.

  • Be an ADEA individual member.

The Orthodontics Department and College of Dentistry have recognized Dr. Shin’s incredible expertise. His achievements go well beyond the ADEA eligibility criteria, leading him to this year’s fellow nomination (Class of 2024) for the University of Iowa. The Leadership Institute is conducted into four phases of training which prepares candidates for the following:

  • Effective decision-making, priority setting and conflict resolution skills—and the knowledge needed to use them effectively.

  • Expanding their administrative competencies.

  • Understanding the inner workings of a dental education institution—and how it fits into a parent institution.

  • Learning about policy issues affecting academic dentistry.

  • Speaking as an advocate with national policymakers.

  • Strengthening relationships within their institutions and nationwide.

  • Emerging with a plan for their careers.

Our Orthodontics Department is incredibly proud of Dr. Kyungsup Shin for this rewarding experience, and we wish him the best of luck in pursuing his future career in Academic Dentistry!
