The University of Iowa College of Dentistry is committed to innovation and excellence. In September, the college appointed Assistant Professor of Prosthodontics Dr. Salah Abuhammoud Director of Digital Clinics to spearhead the college's implementation of more digital technologies and workflows that will enhance our operations, elevate our education, and improve patient outcomes.

Here are five ways Abuhammoud is making an impact:

  1. Evaluating current systems

The college is conducting a thorough review of existing hardware and software to identify areas that need updating or replacement. By addressing critical gaps, we ensure that our systems are optimized for the future of digital dentistry.

  2. Prioritizing regular maintenance

To maintain seamless operations, we’ve established a schedule for routine maintenance. This includes software updates, hardware upgrades, and the implementation of IT security measures, ensuring a reliable and secure digital environment.

  3. Investing in training for staff and faculty

Transitioning to advanced systems requires more than just technology—it requires people who are confident and skilled in its use. Members of our college are receiving comprehensive training on the latest digital tools, empowering them to work efficiently and effectively.

  4. Enhancing in-house lab capabilities

We’re expanding our in-house lab production capabilities by adopting new digital workflows, increasing the number of design stations, and investing in cutting-edge milling and 3D printing equipment. This allows us to improve quality control while providing hands-on learning opportunities for our students.

  5. Innovating the curriculum

Thanks to new partnerships with leading digital companies, we’re integrating state-of-the-art dental implant technology into our curriculum. These advancements ensure that our students are well-prepared to lead in the rapidly evolving field of digital dentistry.
