Jason Schmit Headshot

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry is proud to highlight Dr. Jason Schmit, whose personal journey into orthodontics and dedication to patient care has made a lasting impact both in the clinic and the classroom. With over 25 years of experience, Schmit brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and a deep understanding of the transformative power of orthodontic care.

A Personal Connection to Orthodontics

For Schmit, orthodontics is more than a profession — it’s personal. Reflecting on his early experiences, he said, “If I could show you my school photo from 7th grade, no words would be necessary. My upper front four teeth stuck straight out. Despite not being the best patient, I was thrilled with my smile after completing orthodontic treatment.” This transformative experience ignited his lifelong passion for creating beautiful smiles and life-changing results for patients.

Even after decades in the field, Schmit remains energized by the unique challenges each patient presents. “Solving these challenges is incredibly rewarding. There is no doubt that orthodontics is the best profession!” he shared.

Expertise and Innovations

Schmit has navigated complex cases with a collaborative approach, often working alongside oral surgeons and restorative dentists to achieve optimal outcomes. One of the most challenging scenarios they’ve encountered involves cases with multiple missing teeth, especially when both molars in a quadrant are absent. Through careful planning and teamwork, Schmit has delivered outstanding results for these intricate cases.

In their practice, innovation plays a key role. Schmit is particularly excited about the advancements in aligner technology and indirect bonding, which they’ve incorporated into his treatments. He encourages students to explore these cutting-edge techniques, emphasizing the importance of staying ahead in a rapidly evolving field.

A Commitment to Education

As an adjunct faculty member, Schmit is passionate about nurturing the next generation of orthodontists. His teaching philosophy revolves around breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts and fostering open communication. “I like to ask lots of questions during discussions to ensure full understanding before moving to the next level,” he explained. Watching residents grow and excel in their training is a source of immense pride for Schmit.

Beyond teaching technical skills, Schmit instills in students the value of lifelong learning. “Never stop asking questions. Never stop learning. Although your knowledge and skills will increase rapidly, be humble. No one knows everything about orthodontics,” he advises.

Holistic Care and Leadership

In addition to clinical expertise, Schmit emphasizes the importance of leadership and teamwork in building a successful practice. “Orthodontic practices rely on teamwork. Without the contributions of a committed staff, it is impossible to reach your potential,” he noted. His patient-centered approach — treating every individual as if they were a family member or close friend — has fostered trust and strong relationships over the years.

Looking Ahead

As orthodontic education continues to evolve, Schmit envisions a greater role for adjunct faculty in bridging the gap between academic training and private practice realities. He sees tremendous opportunities for integrating emerging technologies into both education and practice, ensuring students are well-prepared for the future.

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry is fortunate to have Dr. Jason Schmit as part of its community, where their expertise, mentorship, and passion for orthodontics inspire both colleagues and students alike.
