A New Flagship Continuing Education Weekend
Join us for hands-on learning, expert-led sessions, and meaningful connection at the Hawkeye CE Forum, featuring four learning tracks over two days, Friday, October 16–Saturday, October 17.
Each day begins with a shared session for all attendees, featuring presentations by Karen Baker on Friday and Dean Clark Stanford on Saturday. Participants then move into focused track programming, including workshops, interactive experiences, and lecture-based courses led by subject matter experts.
Both days conclude with informal opportunities to connect. On Friday, enjoy refreshments with colleagues at Tavern Blue in Coralville. On Saturday, the Iowa American Student Dental Association (IASDA) will host a student and attendee social at the Airliner.
We look forward to welcoming you for two days of learning, collaboration, and community.

Stop the Resistance: Guarding Patients Against Antibiotic Overuse & Misuse | Karen Baker, MS
Karen Baker, MS is Professor Emeritus after retiring from a 45 year career at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She created a unique role in dental practice and education as a clinical pharmacist focused on optimizing dental drug therapy and minimizing risks for medically complex patients. Karen’s legacy is the only dental education-based pharmacy and drug therapy consultation center in the United States. She has given well over 1500 invited programs nationally and internationally and provides dental clinicians with legendary handouts to enhance chairside care. She has authored many articles and abstracts and continues to provide practical and entertaining lectures around the country.
Course Description:
Antibiotic stewardship has taken on new importance with the emergence of superbugs and the decline in effective and available oral antibiotics. Karen will present an update on recent developments in dental antibiotic prescribing and outline strategies for prescribing to ensure therapeutic success with minimum risk. Difficult questions about antibiotic prophylaxis will be examined and all relevant guidelines and decision tools will be included.
Objectives:
After participating in this lecture, the participant should be able to:
- Select regimens for odontogenic infections based on allergies, intolerances, effectiveness, Black Box Warnings, and current guidelines,
- prescribe antibiotic prophylaxis for selected patients with a variety of implants including cardiac and orthopedic devices, and
- discuss the pros and cons of prophylactic antibiotics for implant placement, tooth extractions, and other surgical procedures in dental practice.

Worn Dentitions: Background and Introduction | Clark Stanford, DDS, PhD, MHA
Clark Stanford, DDS, PhD, MHA, Dr. Clark Stanford is Dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He is a graduate of UIowa (BS, 1984; DDS, 1987; Certificate Prosthodontics, 1992 and PhD, 1992) and University of Illinois Chicago (MHA, 2019). He holds the Edwin B. Green Chair at Iowa. He is Dean Emeritus and Distinguished Professor, University of Illinois Chicago (Dean UIC College of Dentistry, 2014-2022). He is a fellow of the ACD, ICD, PFA, ITI, Academy Prosthodontics, and others. He is a Diplomate of the Academy of Osseointegration. He serves as Treasurer, Institute of Medicine of Chicago. He is Editor-in-Chief of International Journal Oral Maxillofacial Implants. He serves on NIH/NIDCR Research Council, Institute of Medicine of Chicago Board, NFED Research Council and others. He has published more than 200 research papers, led multiple consensus conferences on medical device design, clinical trials, health disparities, research collaboration and transformations in professional education.
Course Description:
The diagnosis and treatment approaches of abrasion, attrition and erosion lie in the early detection and assessment of the underlying conditions. This presentation will review the current understanding of the medical causes, classification of wear and the application of a staged diagnostic and treatment concepts to restore the worn dentition.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, attendees will be able to:
- Understand the etiology, diagnosis and treatment approaches for the worn dentition.
- Understand the classification systems and application to Prosthodontic rehabilitation
- Understand various approaches to rehabilitation

Course Description:
This track provides both lecture-based learning and hands-on experience focused on esthetic and functional restorative dentistry. Participants will explore anterior composite restoration techniques and gain exposure to additional topics such as oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea. Emphasis is placed on practical application and techniques that can be implemented immediately in clinical practice.

Course Description:
This track features both a hands-on workshop and a lecture focused on contemporary periodontics and implant site development. The hands-on course covers alveolar ridge preservation, including minimally invasive extractions, grafting techniques, and suturing for ridge stability. The lecture course focuses on maxillary sinus augmentation, emphasizing anatomy, diagnosis, and surgical approaches.

Course Description:
This lecture series features fast-paced, interactive sessions covering a range of contemporary pediatric dental topics relevant to clinical practice. Designed for all oral health care providers who treat children, this track focuses on building confidence and enhancing clinical decision-making across a variety of patient scenarios, including those involving special health care needs.
Through case-based discussion and audience engagement, participants will gain practical, evidence-based strategies to improve patient care, communication, and outcomes in pediatric dentistry.
Staff Sessions
Continuing education designed for the entire dental team. Topics may include areas such as nutrition, patient de-escalation, jurisprudence, mental health, and infection control. Specific session details will be announced.
