Michelle McQuistan DDS, MS
Officer for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Michelle McQuistan DDS, MS (she/her/hers) is the Officer for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and an Associate Professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry in the College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics.
Dr. McQuistan is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the COD’s DEI strategic plan. She has been a member of the college’s DEI committee since 2006, and she chaired the committee from 2013-2019. Additionally, she represents the college on several University of Iowa diversity committees. She is a co-PI on the University’s Summer Health Professions Education Program. Dr. McQuistan is a 2019 recipient of the University of Iowa’s Diversity Catalyst Award. She has completed Safe Zone, Green Bandana (Kognito Suicide Prevention), and National Multicultural Institute “Train the Trainer” training and is UI Build certified.
She received her DDS and MS in Dental Public Health from the University of Iowa and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry certificate program at the University of Florida-Jacksonville Clinic. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and is past President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry.
Dr. McQuistan has taught a variety of courses and lectures at the pre-doctoral and graduate level in Dental Public Health and cultural competency. She has also supervised dental students in the Geriatrics and Special Needs clinic. She provides general dentistry to all patients, including underserved populations, in the Faculty General Practice clinic.
Dr. McQuistan’s research focuses on access to care with a focus in two main areas: oral health literacy, and dental students’ and dentists’ willingness to treat underserved populations.
Kelly Smith
Kelly Smith (she/her/hers) is the administrative assistant for both the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Advanced Standing Program. She is responsible for assisting with DEI initiaves and activities.
