Course Title:

“Selective Caries Removal and Restorative Options”

Description:

This presentation will review the evidence supporting minimally invasive dentistry and selective caries removal. It will then present appropriate restorative options and post-procedure expectations, followed by case presentations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand evidence-based clinical guidelines on restorative treatment for caries lesions

  2. Understand the evidence for selective caries removal

  3. Understand the appropriate restorative options when using selective caries removal

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Howard J. Cowen, D.D.S., M.S., D.A.B.S.C.D., spent four years in the US Navy and four years in private practice before joining the College of Dentistry in 1982. He obtained a Master’s in Public Health Dentistry and has been Director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Dental Program for more than 30 years. He developed and is currently the Director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Postgraduate Certificate Program and clinical professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. Dr. Cowen treats private patients at the College of Dentistry, with an emphasis on geriatric, medically, physically and cognitively impaired adults. He is a fellow of the American Society of Geriatric Dentistry, a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry and is the inaugural recipient of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Professorship in Geriatric & Special Needs Dentistry.

Course Title:

“The Endo-Restorative Interface: Biomechanical Principles for Conservative Access and Definitive Restoration”

Course Description:

Minimizing structural compromise while ensuring thorough endodontic disinfection represents one of the most critical challenges in modern restorative dentistry. This one-hour presentation provides an evidence-based analysis of the endo-restorative interface, demonstrating how early clinical decisions directly dictate the ultimate fracture resistance of the tooth. Attendees will evaluate contemporary literature surrounding the preservation of pericervical dentin, the immediate execution of a coronal seal, and the transition away from radicular dowels toward advanced deep-chamber bonding techniques. The session concludes with a structured approach to the "rule of remaining walls" to guide predictable macro-restorative choices.

Course Learning Objectives:

By the end of this lecture, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze the biomechanical impact of structural tissue loss on endodontically treated teeth to differentiate between historically aggressive protocols and modern tissue-preservation paradigms.

  • Critique the clinical implications of conservative access cavity designs with respect to the preservation of pericervical dentin and its relationship to long-term fracture resistance.

  • Determine the appropriate definitive restorative configuration—specifically comparing partial-coverage adhesive overlays to full-coverage crowns—based on the strategic assessment of the ferrule effect and remaining structural walls.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Danielle Wingrove is a board-certified endodontist who is thrilled to return to the institution that launched her career. A 2004 DDS graduate of the University of Iowa, Dr. Wingrove spent three years as a general dentist in the U.S. Navy before completing her endodontic residency at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in 2009.

After a successful decade in private practice, she brought her clinical expertise to academia, serving at OHSU and later as the Assistant Dean of Curriculum and Section Head of Endodontics at the University of Utah School of Dentistry. Blending clinical mastery with educational theory, she earned her Ed.D. in Health Professions Education from A.T. Still University in 2024. Dr. Wingrove brings this wealth of experience back home to Iowa City in her new role as the Departmental Executive Officer of Endodontics, where she looks forward to guiding the department through innovation, mentorship, and clinical excellence.
