“Suppressing Acid Starving Teeth”
Description:
Chronic acid suppression therapy is widely prescribed for gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. However, long-term use may be associated with systemic, oral, and dental consequences relevant to dental professionals. This continuing education activity provides a comprehensive review of acid suppression medications, indications, duration of therapy, and adverse effects – with a focused emphasis on oral health, dental hard tissues, and nutrient absorption. Participants will gain evidence- based strategies to identify potential medication-related oral risks, collaborate with medical providers regarding deprescribing when appropriate, and counsel patients on nutritional, lifestyle, and preventive measures that support oral and overall health.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate between types of acid suppressing medications
Identify common adverse effects of chronic acid suppression therapy relevant to oral and dental health
Explain how acid suppression alters absorption of nutrients and the potential effects on teeth and supporting structures
Recognize oral manifestation associated with long-term acid suppression therapy, including xerostomia, caries risk, and altered oral microbiome
Apply nutritional and lifestyle recommendations including vitamin and mineral supplementation, and to support health in patients requiring long-term therapy
Discuss evidence-based deprescribing principles and the dentist’s role in interprofessional communication
Speaker Bio:
Matthew R. Yeates, PharmD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He practices in Dental Pharmacy and teaches pharmacotherapy within the dental curriculum. Dr. Yeates earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, and his clinical interests include functional medicine and non-sterile compounding to meet oral health needs.
