Course Title:
“Pigmented Lesions in the Oral Cavity”
Course Description:
In clinical practice, oral healthcare providers encounter many conditions that are routinely managed. Although pathologic changes in the oral cavity are infrequent, providers who can identify these abnormalities, formulate an appropriate diagnosis, and provide timely patient management have the skills essential for comprehensive patient care. This course will be a case study review of the various pigmented lesions that occur in the oral cavity. The course will include a discussion of the clinical and historical features, development of a differential diagnosis list, and management strategies of these conditions.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program participants should be able to:
Understand the importance and determine the components of pertinent medical and clinical history in the evaluation of a patient presenting with mucosal changes.
Demonstrate an understanding of the etiology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis for pigmented lesions.
Formulate a clinical differential diagnosis list, develop an initial management or treatment plan, and understand the prognosis for these conditions.
Speaker Bio:
Dr. Sherry Timmons is a faculty member in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine (OPRM). She maintains an active faculty practice and continues to teach pre-doctoral and graduate students. Her current professional memberships include: Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists as well as a member of the American Dental Association, the Iowa Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association,
Course title:
“An Oral Ulcer Walks Into Your Office... Now What?”
Course Description:
Patients with an oral ulcer are frequently encountered in dental practice, and the underlying causes range from benign traumatic lesions to infections, lymphoproliferative disorders, and oral malignancies. Through a series of clinical cases, this course presents a practical approach to evaluating an oral ulcer, developing a differential diagnosis, recognizing key diagnostic clues, formulating an appropriate approach to diagnosis and clinical management.
Learning Objectives:
Develop a systematic approach to the clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis of patients presenting with an oral ulceration.
Recognize the clinical features of selected reactive, infectious, lymphoproliferative, and malignant oral ulcerative lesions through a case-based approach.
Determine the appropriate diagnostic and management approach for patients presenting with an oral ulcer.
Speaker Biographies:
Dr. Sem Tikkhanarak is an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Fellow and a PhD candidate in Oral Science at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He earned his DDS from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, in 2020, and his MS in Oral Science from the University of Iowa in 2024. He became a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology in 2025 and completed the Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Iowa in 2026.
Dr. Jay Saepoo is a fourth-year resident in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a PhD student in Oral Science at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He earned his DDS in 2019 and his MS in Oral Medicine in 2023 from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand.
Dr. Raghad Hammad earned her BDS from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in 2022. She then completed one year of general practice residency in Jordan and is currently in her second year of residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She aims to use her passion and training to advocate for greater oral cancer awareness and to improve understanding, education, and care for patients.
