On October 25–26,  over 2,000 ninth grade students from local high schools traveled to the Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena in Cedar Rapids to learn about careers from multiple industries. The event, “Career Inspire,” was hosted by Junior Achievement of Eastern Iowa.  A booth featuring the careers in dentistry was hosted by the three dental hygienists in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry: Cathy Skotowski, Pat Juffer-Flake and Stephanie Gramlich. Students had the opportunity to learn about the different careers in dentistry, including that of a dentist, dental hygienist, dental assistant, and dental lab technician.  Students enjoyed playing an interactive game where they attempted to line up beverages based on the amount of sugar in the beverages.  Students also saw a 3D scanner using models and equipment graciously provided by the Department of Orthodontics in action.  Career Inspire held its inaugural event last year, but this was the first year that dentistry was represented.  Feedback from students, teachers, and administrators were excellent and plans are underway for the college to participate annually.
