Headshot of Orthodontic Resident, Awotoye Waheed

The University of Iowa continues to make strides in orthodontic research, as Dr. Waheed Awotoye, a second-year orthodontics resident, has been honored with the Harry Sicher Research Award by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). This distinguished award recognizes outstanding research contributions to the field of orthodontics.

Dr. Awotoye’s research, titled “Novel Pathogenic Mutations Contributing to the Risk of Non-Syndromic Orofacial Clefts,” dove into the genetic factors influencing orofacial clefts, a condition that affects one in a thousand newborns every day. His work is expected to advance understanding in this critical area of craniofacial research, potentially improving early diagnosis and treatment strategies.

A Proud Moment for the University of Iowa

The achievement was met with high praise from Dr. Clark M. Stanford, Professor and Dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. In a congratulatory message, Dr. Stanford acknowledged the significance of Dr. Awotoye’s accomplishment, stating:

“Congratulations on carrying on the strong research tradition of Orthodontics conveyed through the work of Drs. Sicher, Brodie, and Tom Graber. The AAO has a tradition of funding only the best, and I congratulate you on this wonderful accomplishment! So much to be proud of!”

Dr. Awotoye expressed his gratitude to his colleagues and mentor, Dr. Azeez Butali, for their encouragement and support throughout his research journey. In his announcement to peers, he remarked:

“I want to express my sincere gratitude for your tremendous support throughout this journey. Your encouragement has been invaluable, and I am truly thankful. Congratulations to all of us for this achievement – we’ve brought it home!”

Recognizing Excellence in Orthodontic Research

The AAO’s Harry Sicher Research Award is given annually to residents who demonstrate exceptional research capabilities in orthodontics. This year, the Council on Scientific Affairs (COSA) reviewed numerous applications before selecting Dr. Awotoye as one of the winners. The awards will be presented at the 2025 AAO Annual Session.

With this achievement, Dr. Awotoye joins a prestigious lineage of researchers whose work has significantly contributed to orthodontics and craniofacial science. His success highlights the University of Iowa’s commitment to excellence in dental education and research.

Looking Ahead

As Dr. Awotoye prepares to present his findings at the upcoming AAO Annual Session, his research promises to shape future studies and innovations in the field. His dedication and hard work serve as an inspiration to fellow students and professionals in orthodontics and beyond.

Congratulations to Dr. Waheed Awotoye on this remarkable achievement!
