University of Iowa College of Dentistry faculty members Drs. Kyungsup Shin and Steve Marshall were invited by the Vice President for Research and Office of the Provost to celebrate the publishing of their 2023 textbook “Practical Early Orthodontic Treatment: A Case-Based Review” on April 15 at the Old Capitol Museum.

Joined by 29 other published authors from around campus, the event was an opportunity for university leaders to celebrate the significant contributions to academic literature by members of the university community. The event featured remarks from university leadership and readings from select publications from faculty across disciplines.

The textbook was released in 2023 and authored by Dr. Thomas Southard, professor emeritus in orthodontics, Dr. Shin, Dr. Marshall, and Iowa orthodontics alumna Dr. Laura Bonner. The textbook received rave reviews, described by experts as a comprehensive resource that fulfills a previously unmet need in orthodontics literature. The text serves as a mini-orthodontics residency, with a straightforward question-and-answer format that encourages readers to think critically and self-assess their own understanding.

Robert Kazmierski, an orthodontist with over 30 years of experience and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics shared that sentiment in his review. “I cannot imagine a course in residency or post-residency that would provide a better foundation in early orthodontic treatment,” said Kazmierski.

Dr. Shin, the graduate program director and director of clinical research for the college, was named the Ross D. Christensen Family Professor of Orthodontics in 2023.

Dr. Marshall joined the Department of Orthodontics in 2023 as a clinical professor after serving as an adjunct professor and visiting associate professor since 2004.  He is currently in his 41st year as a practicing orthodontist.
