The Department of Orthodontics achieved second place in the highly competitive American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) Resident Case Competition at the AAO’s annual meeting last month in Philadelphia.

Iowa’s second-place finish came among 89 submitted cases treated by their orthodontic residents from more than 40 orthodontic residency programs across the United States and North America. This accomplishment further reinforces Iowa Orthodontics’ exceptional clinical expertise, making the 9th win in the past 10 years of this resident competition program, including three straight first-place finishes form 2014-16.

The award-winning case was presented by second-year resident, Dr. Abbie Wieland. Wieland is under the supervision of faculty members Dr. Emma Mueldener and Dr. Michael Callan.

Wieland also had the honor of presenting her research at the William R. Proffit Resident Scholar Award event, recognizing her outstanding collaborative research. She was mentored by Dr. Sukirth Ganesan and Dr. Lina Moreno in her research efforts.
