Established in 1882, the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics stands as a pillar of dental education and research in the United States. The College's commitment to orthodontic education began early. In 1936, Dr. L. Bodine Higley was appointed as the acting head of orthodontics, a position he held until 1953. Significant contributions to orthodontic research and education marked Dr. Higley's tenure. In 1946, he initiated the Iowa Facial Growth Study, a longitudinal research project that collected extensive data on craniofacial development in children, providing invaluable insights into facial growth patterns.

Dr. George Andreasen, who joined the Department of Orthodontics in 1963 and served as its chairman from 1965 to 1975, made groundbreaking contributions to the field. He patented Nitinol wire, also known as "memory wire," which revolutionized orthodontic treatments by providing a more consistent and gentle force for tooth movement. 

Today, the Department of Orthodontics continues to lead in research areas such as craniofacial growth, biomechanics, and the genetics of orofacial clefts. Recent initiatives include digitizing the Iowa Growth Study collection, making decades of orthodontic research globally accessible.

The College offers a robust orthodontics specialty program designed to educate professionals in both orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
