The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics made a strong impression at the 2025 International Association for Dental Research (IADR) General Session, held June 25–28 in Barcelona, Spain. 

Faculty, students, and researchers from Iowa contributed significantly to the global exchange of cutting-edge dental science, with numerous presentations and a prestigious award winner.

Among the highlights of the conference was third-year dental student Saba Manafi, who earned second place in the International Hatton Award Competition. Manafi’s research, mentored by Drs. Eric Van Otterloo and Aline Petrin, stood out among a competitive field of international scholars.

The UI College of Dentistry was well-represented across multiple sessions, with presentations and symposiums, including:

  • Dr. Avita Maharishi – “Bonding to Zirconia: Relative Importance of MDP Adhesives and Sandblasting” (Poster Presentation)
  • Dr. Victor Feitosa – “Gypsum Incorporation in Universal Adhesive Overcomes Issues From Saliva Contamination” (Poster Presentation)
  • Dr. Azeez Butali – “Enhancing Patient Management of Orofacial Clefts Through Education in Nigeria” (Poster Presentation)
  • Dr. Lina Moreno - "Multiethnic GWAS of Malocclusion Phenotypes identifies Multiple Risk Variants" (Poster Presentation)
  • Sam Swearson (PhD student; Amendt Lab) – “New Models and Treatments for Craniosynostosis” (Poster Presentation)
  • Yetunde Abaniwonda (visiting scholar of Dr. Azeez Butali) – “Clinically Actionable Secondary Findings in 278 African Families with NSOFC” (Poster Presentation)
  • Mariana Queiroz (former visiting scholar of Drs. Cris Vidal and Ariene Leme Kraus) – “Impact of Curing Protocols on Dual-Cure Resin Cements Properties” (Poster Presentation)

Additionally, Dr. Erica Teixeira, president-elect of the Women in Science Network (WISN) attended its business meeting on June 26, in conjunction with the IADR General Session.

The breadth of participation reflects the college’s commitment to advancing oral health through interdisciplinary research and global engagement.

The IADR General Session is one of the most prestigious gatherings in dental research, drawing thousands of participants from around the world.
