At the University of Iowa College of Dentistry's All-College Conference on August 18, Dr. Marcela Hernandez, clinical professor of Family Dentistry, was recognized as the recipient of the 2025 James H. and Hermine E. McLeran Faculty Award.
Established in 2002 through memorials and a campaign honoring Dr. McLeran’s dedication to patients, students, and faculty, the endowed award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching and a strong commitment to patient-centered care.
Over her more than two decades of service to the college, Hernandez has exemplified these ideals through her outstanding dedication to student mentorship, her unwavering commitment to patient-centered clinical care, and her significant contributions to professional service and scholarship. As a past Group Leader, she guided hundreds of D4 students with wisdom, compassion, and rigor, while also serving as a role model for junior faculty. Her leadership in education, research, and community outreach has left a lasting impact on the department, the college, and the profession of dentistry.
Hernandez’s recognition as the 2025 McLeran Faculty Award recipient is a fitting acknowledgment of her commitment to dental education and patient-centered care. Hernandez will be honored during a noon luncheon on Sept. 10 in S395 in the Dental Science Buiding.
