Dr. Ankita Samal, a third-year resident in the Periodontics Program at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, earned second place in the Clinical Case Competition at the Midwest Society of Periodontology Annual Meeting held in Chicago.
The Midwest Society of Periodontology Clinical Case Competition brings together leading periodontics programs from across the region, with each institution selecting its top case for presentation. Samal was recognized following a close tie among competitors, reflecting the high caliber of this year’s field.
Her presentation featured a 1.5-year follow-up on a complex regenerative defect, highlighting both surgical precision and long-term clinical outcomes. Judges and attendees praised her depth of literature knowledge, scientific clarity, and thoughtful execution of the case. The strength of the clinical results and her ability to clearly articulate the biological rationale behind treatment distinguished her among an accomplished group of peers.
Samal’s achievement continues a strong tradition of excellence within the Iowa Periodontics Program. Over the past three years, Iowa residents have consistently been selected as top-three finalists in the Clinical Case Competition, earning first- or second-place honors each year.
This sustained record of success reflects the strength of the program’s clinical training and mentorship, as well as the discipline and preparation of its residents.
