Steven D. Marshall, clinical professor in the University of Iowa Department of Orthodontics, has received the 2026 Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics from the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO).

The award recognizes an exemplary senior clinician and board-certified orthodontist who demonstrates exceptional dedication to the profession through clinical excellence and teaching.

“Excellence in patient care and teaching is central to the mission of the College," says Marshall, " I hope my efforts serve as inspiration to my fellow faculty, the staff, and the students of the College of Dentistry.”

Marshall has served in various faculty roles in Iowa’s orthodontics program since 2003 and was appointed clinical professor in 2023. He has been a strong advocate for board certification among graduates and alumni of the Iowa orthodontic program and has helped maintain the department’s longstanding record of achievement in ABO certification.

He previously received the ABO’s O.B. Vaughn Special Recognition Award in 2015.

Marshall earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Northwestern University Dental School in 1984, where he was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society. He completed his certificate in orthodontics and a master’s degree in oral biology at Northwestern University in 1986. He also holds a master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Knox College.

In addition to his academic work, Marshall maintained a private orthodontic practice in Chicago from 1986 to 2022. He also served as a clinical assistant professor of orthodontics at Northwestern University Dental School until the school closed in 2000.

Marshall is associate editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the AJO-DO Clinical Companion. He served for eight years on the American Association of Orthodontists Council on Scientific Affairs, including as chair from 2021 to 2023.

He has co-authored two orthodontic textbooks and published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles on facial growth, transverse dentoalveolar development, and skeletal anchorage. He also has presented at national and regional orthodontic meetings across the United States.

Marshall is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Midwest Society of Orthodontists, the Iowa Society of Orthodontists, and the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. He served as president of the Angle Society’s Midwest Component from 2014 to 2015.
