Dr. Sukirth Ganesan, associate professor and graduate program director in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics, recently served as an examiner for the oral examination component of the American Board of Periodontology, held April 27–May 1 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Following a national application and interview process, Ganesan was selected as one of five new examiners from across the country representing academia, private practice, and the military to join the board’s distinguished group of examiners.
Approximately 50 examiners evaluated candidates seeking board certification in periodontics and dental implant surgery through the American Board of Periodontology. Board certification is considered one of the highest professional achievements within the specialty and requires candidates to demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge, judgment, and evidence-based decision-making.
Ganesan joins Dr. Georgia Johnson, former department executive officer of periodontics from 1998 to 2017, as one of the few University of Iowa faculty members to serve as an examiner for the board.
His selection reflects national recognition of his contributions to periodontal education, clinical excellence, and leadership within the specialty.
