The American Academy of Periodontology recently convened the Best Evidence Consensus Meeting on the Prevention of Peri-Implantitis in Chicago from May 15–18. The meeting brought together invited experts from across the country, including periodontists, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, dental hygienists, representatives from academia and private practice, and industry partners, to critically evaluate the current evidence surrounding peri-implant disease prevention.
The University of Iowa Department of Periodontics was well represented throughout the meeting. Sukirth Ganesan, advanced education program director of periodontics, led the manuscript focused on primordial prevention of peri-implantitis, while Carlos Garaicoa, clerkship director of periodontics, co-authored the consensus work on primary prevention strategies.
In addition, former department executive officer Gustavo Avila-Ortiz co-chaired the consensus meeting, and several Iowa periodontics alumni and collaborators contributed to and led work within their respective groups, including Emilio Couso-Queiruga (MS ’22), Sandra Stuhr (MS ’22), and Karim Ghishan, who participated in the University of Iowa Visiting Scholar Program in Periodontics from 2021 to 2023.
Iowa Periodontics continues to be a leader and engage nationally in advancing evidence-based periodontal and peri-implant care.
