The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) invited Sukirth Ganesan, Centennial Research Associate Professor and Director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics, to serve as one of only two featured speakers at the 242nd National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council Meeting on May 20, 2026, at the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
The National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council serves as the primary advisory body to NIDCR and the National Institutes of Health on national research priorities, funding direction, and scientific initiatives in dental, oral, and craniofacial research.
Ganesan presented his work, From Waistline to Gumline: Metabolic Dysfunction Reshapes the Oral Microenvironment, before NIDCR officials, advisory council members, program officers, NIH leaders, invited scientists, and members of the public.
The invitation highlights national recognition of the University of Iowa’s leadership in oral-systemic health research and its contributions to understanding how metabolic diseases influence oral inflammation, the microbiome, and periodontal health.
The presentation highlighted ongoing translational and clinical research at Iowa focused on obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and the oral microbiome — areas that place the university at the forefront of oral-systemic health research nationwide.
