Practical Early Orthodontic Treatment: A Case-Based Review began seven years ago as Iowa orthodontic faculty compiled their collective experiences, cases, and treatments into an outstanding and comprehensive (848 pages) treatise on the management of orthodontic problems arising during childhood as permanent dentition develops. The text expertly shifts between general principles and guidelines, with exhaustive instruction in the text and accompanying web-based videos, alongside clear cases for evaluating and treating childhood malocclusions and dentofacial deformities.

"The use of a question/answer format for a whole book is very engaging and allows the reader to check what they understand, contemplate an answer and check with what the authors' think of the question.  Great performance!" ~Clark Stanford, dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry

The text serves as a mini-orthodontics residency, with a straightforward question-and-answer format that encourages readers to think critically and self-assess their own understanding.

"The format of question and answer...  allows you to test your knowledge before reading and learning from the authors' opinion," said James Garrett.

Another review praised the web-based videos that accompany the text: “I really enjoy reading this book, especially because of the video access associated with each section. It feels like I’m actually learning from the authors in a residency program.”

The combined effect is that readers will have a robust foundation for making the best possible childhood evaluation and treatment decisions.

In total, the book offers:

• A thorough overview of general early treatment principles

• An extensive discussion of facial skeleton, airway, and dentition growth and development concepts

• Comprehensive explorations of early crowding, eruption problems, and missing succedaneous teeth

• Extensive presentations of early anteroposterior, vertical, and transverse dental and skeletal problems with treatment solutions

• A vast collection of high-quality images illustrating the conditions and appropriate therapies

The text belongs on the shelf of everyone who treats childhood for orthodontic issues, whether you are an orthodontist, orthodontic resident, pediatric dentist, pediatric dental resident, or a dentist in general practice who manages orthodontic issues.

“I am a practicing dentist, and this is the best orthodontic book I have ever read. When it comes to early orthodontic treatment, the information that you would find in other "major" texts... pales in comparison to what you will learn from this book.” Amirali Aghili’s review on Amazon

The authors of the textbook are Thomas E. Southard, Steve D. Marshall, Laura L. Bonner, and Kyungsup Shin.
