The University of Iowa College of Dentistry has appointed Dr. Cris M.P. Vidal, DDS, MS, PhD, as the new Departmental Executive Officer of Operative Dentistry.
Dr. Vidal joined the College of Dentistry in 2016 and currently serves as an associate professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry. A clinician-scientist with training in operative dentistry, biomaterials, and cariology, she brings extensive expertise in both clinical care and research to her new leadership role.
Dr. Vidal earned her DDS and MS in Operative Dentistry from São Paulo State University (UNESP) and her PhD in Dental Materials from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. She completed a visiting scholar program at the University of Oulu, Finland, and postdoctoral training at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Internationally recognized for her research in dental adhesion, biomaterials, and caries progression, Dr. Vidal has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and secured multiple federal and industry-sponsored research grants. Her current work focuses on understanding the biochemical and mechanical properties of dentin, mechanisms of tissue degradation, and therapeutic approaches to preserve and restore tooth structure.
Throughout her career, Dr. Vidal has demonstrated a strong commitment to mentoring students and postdoctoral scholars and has contributed to professional organizations such as the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR), the Academy of Operative Dentistry, and the Journal of Dental Research editorial board.
Her appointment reflects the College’s ongoing dedication to advancing excellence in education, research, and patient care.
