Shin shared experiences and knowledge related to advanced education in orthodontics and orthodontic residency programs. Specifically, Shin and the panelists discussed how to strengthen critical thinking skills in residency programs, how to structure the preparation process for the written and scenario-based clinical examinations, how to encourage utilizing essential clinical assessment tools, and how to develop high-quality orthodontic training programs.

Lina Moreno, Department Chair of Orthodontics, and assistant professor Emma Mueldener joined Shin at the symposium.

“It was an excellent meeting, where we communicated with the educators from all over the other graduate programs in Orthodontics," says Moreno. "We strive to advance our specialty and it is possible when we talk to each other and learn strengths from each other."

The UI College of Dentistry's orthodontics department is one of the most successful orthodontics programs in the country. Residents at Iowa have won the most awards for the Resident Case Competitions among orthodontic programs in the United States and North American.

Founded in 1929 as the first specialty board in dentistry, the ABO sets the standard of excellence in patient care and promotes high-quality treatment and care for all of its certified orthodontists, serving as a resource for orthodontists nationwide.
