The American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) is the premier research organization for advancing oral science, dental, and craniofacial research. The Iowa Section of the AADOCR promotes these core areas of research, provides support to researchers in Iowa, and conducts an annual meeting to publicize important important findings and research in the region.

Due to a family emergency, Dr. Hernandez-Kapila cannot deliver the keynote address at the 70th Annual Meeting of the Iowa Section of the AADOCR. Dr. Azeez Butali, professor at the University of Iowa and AAAS Fellow, has kindly agreed to deliver our keynote address. The planning committee for the Iowa Section of the AADOCR and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry sends our thoughts to Dr. Hernandez Kapila and our gratitude to Dr. Butali for accepting the invitation at the last minute.

Azeez Butali

Keynote Speaker

Azeez Butali is a professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at the University of Iowa. He is the world’s foremost expert in the genetics of cleft lip and palate among African populations for which he has received numerous National Institutes of Health and foundation grants supporting his on-going work. He also directs the African Craniofacial Anomalies Network, a collaboration of scientists in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda, and he was recently named 2022 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is consistently recognized for his efforts as a mentor, receiving numerous awards from students and former students.

Juhi Uttamani

Juhi Uttamani joined the UI College of Dentistry Department of Periodontics in 2022 after completing her Bachelors of Dental Surgery from Mumbai, India and PhD in Oral sciences with an advanced postgraduate certificate in periodontology from University Of Illinois at Chicago. She was also a postdoctoral research fellow at UIC, Chicago.

Eric Van Otterloo

Eric Van Otterloo obtained his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology, from the University of Iowa in 2012. Subsequently, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate from 2012-2019 in the Department of Craniofacial Biology at the University of Colorado, School of Dental Medicine, before transitioning back to the UI. Dr. Van Otterloo joined the UI College of Dentistry, and the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research, in 2019 as an assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics.
