Student Research Profile: Improving Dry Mouth and Oral Health in Older Populations with Dentures

Wednesday, February 14, 2024
The Dental Student Research Program at Iowa Dentistry has a long and venerable tradition of teaching students to conduct and think critically about research. Fourth-year dental student Colton Curtis exemplifies these qualities in his work investigating methods to improve dry mouth and oral health in older populations with dentures. Curtis’ experience over the course of his dental career illustrates this well. He began doing research in his first year, but it took him a while to zero in on the right topic.
Arshi Munjal

DDS student Arshi Munjal featured in Dare to Discover campaign

Friday, January 26, 2024
Arshi Munjal, a DDS student, was named a 2024 Dare to Discover student. Munjal is studying ways our diets can impact the oral microbiome. The primary aim of her research is to compare microbial composition and co-occurrence patters in different areas of the oral cavity and then evaluate how they vary in individuals with different diets. Research in this area is limited, so Munjal hopes to better understand how our diets influence the oral microbiome and evaluate potential consequences on dental and perioral diseases.
Michael Chavez

DDS student Michael Chavez featured in Dare to Discover campaign

Friday, January 19, 2024
Michael Chavez, a DDS/PhD student, was named a 2024 Dare to Discover students. Chavez is researching ways to harness the power of mineralized tissues. These mineralized tissues possess an inherent capacity for repair and regeneration. Chavez is aiming to gain insights into the underlying mechanisms of mineralization to pave the way for new and innovative treatments.

T90/R90 Training Program Renewed

Continuously funded by the NIDCR since 2013, the University of Iowa Institutional Training Program in Oral Health Research (a T90/R90 grant) was renewed for another five years with a $3,525,397 award. The T90/R90 is one of the chief funding mechanisms for supporting Iowa Dentistry PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. These researchers are PhD candidates in Oral Science, postdoctoral researchers working with Iowa Dentistry's research faculty, or PhD candidates or postdoctoral researchers in other University of Iowa programs conducting oral health-related research.

The 5-year training grant is led by director Steven Levy, Wright-Bush-Shreves Endowed Professor of Research and professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, and associate Director Jeffrey Banas, director of the Iowa Institute of Oral Health Research and professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
