Seed Grants

On an annual basis, the University of Iowa College of Dentistry provides seed grants for early-career researchers or new projects. The proposal process mirrors the process used to evaluate National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants. The purpose of seed grants are to prepare researchers for submitting grants for national peer-reviewed funding agencies, like the NIH.

CRISP Pilot Grants

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry accepts applications on a rolling basis for pilot grants to support clinical research or dental education research.

Seed Grant Process

Announcement of Grant and Guidelines

In mid-summer, the College of Dentistry will send out an announcement detailing the guidelines for submitting a Seed Grant.

Notice of Intent to Apply

Around the beginning of the academic year (late August typically), those intending to apply for a Seed Grant will submit their intent to apply by sending an email to Mikaela Rhoads (mikaela-rhoads@uiowa.edu). After this deadline, Dr. Jeff Banas, director of the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research, will assign projects to the Research Proposal Advisory Panel.

Full Proposal Submission

In the mid-Fall (typically late October), final proposals are submitted to Mikaela Rhoads (mikaela-rhoads@uiowa.edu).

Shortly thereafter, the research panel will begin reviewing the proposal.

Proposals Evaluated and Scored

The research panel will evaluate and score proposals after the proposals are submitted. This progress typically concludes in January when seed grant funding letters are sent to awardees.

Post-Seed Grant Support

Ann Lawler (ann-lawler@uiowa.edu) will issue a Master Key File (MFK) for financial transactions for each awardee and email the information to them.

University of Iowa Funding Opportunity Resources

Pivot

Pivot is an online funding database where researchers, faculty and research administrators can easily explore new avenues for funding, view funding opportunities uniquely matched to their scholar profile, collaborate with colleagues and manage the results of the process to build a funding strategy that supports both immediate and long-term funding needs.

The funding opportunities include national agencies as well as foundation-based and industry-backed grants.

User can add filters so that the database returns results curated specifically for the interests and needs of the researcher.

Limited Submissions

Limited submission programs are competitive funding programs that restrict the number of proposals that may be submitted from one institution (the University of Iowa). Applicants from the University of Iowa for programs with limited submission restrictions are determined through an internal review process.

A searchable database of limited submissions funding opportunities is available on the University of Iowa website.

Sign up for Funding Focus to receive a weekly digest of limited submission opportunities available to the University of Iowa community.

National Opportunities

The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Funding opportunities from the NIH have and continue to support numerous research and training programs at the University of Iowa. The NIH provides a searchable database for funding opportunities.

The National Institute for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)

The largest portion of federal funding for the University of Iowa College of Dentistry comes from the NIDCR. The NIDCR has a searchable database of all notices of funding opportunities.
